Dürr returns to the slopes as shiffrin and aicher clash in åre

Aicher battles shiffrin for overall title amidst dürr's return
The alpine skiing World Cup heads to Åre this weekend with a compelling narrative: the tight race between Mikaela Shiffrin and German standout Emma Aicher for the overall crystal globe. Aicher, trailing Shiffrin by 125 points with six races remaining, will need to secure strong performances in Sweden to close the gap. Dürr's return adds another layer of intrigue to the competition.
Dürr, speaking through the German Ski Federation (DSV), expressed her readiness for the final push of the season. "I’m fit and looking forward to the final sprint with the last races of the season in Scandinavia," she stated. Åre, a favorite venue for the 34-year-old, is known for its undulating terrain, demanding precision in both giant slalom and slalom.
Fabiana Dorigo will also represent Germany in the giant slalom, while Jessica Hilzinger will compete in the slalom. Meanwhile, the men's World Cup sees Simon Jocher and Maximilian Schwarz competing in the downhill, and Anton Grammel in the super-G in Courchevel, France. The weekend in Courchevel will also feature a downhill and two super-Gs, one serving as a replacement for the cancelled race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Aicher’s recent struggles, including a disappointing performance in Val di Fassa, haven’t dampened her competitive spirit. "I’m pissed," she admitted after a challenging race, highlighting the intense pressure to perform.
The schedule includes giant slalom on Saturday, March 14th, and slalom on Sunday, March 15th, both live on Eurosport and HBO Max.
While Shiffrin's dominance is undeniable, Aicher’s determination and the unpredictable nature of alpine skiing ensure a thrilling conclusion to the season.
