End of an era: johannes rydzek hangs up his skis after four olympics
After a distinguished career spanning five Olympic Winter Games and seven World Championship titles, German Nordic combined star Johannes Rydzek is retiring from elite competition. The 34-year-old's decision, announced this weekend, marks the end of an era for the sport.

Rydzek reflects on a career marked by both triumph and heartbreak
Rydzek, speaking from ahead of his final World Cup event in Oslo, expressed a sense of peace with his choice. “It feels right. I’m completely at peace with myself,” he stated. His career, however, wasn't without its disappointments. A particularly painful moment came at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where he was leading after the normal hill but was overtaken in the final few hundred meters. A similar heartbreak occurred just three weeks ago in a team sprint with teammate Vinzenz Geiger, where a strong position was lost due to falls.
The four-time Olympian – who won bronze in the team event in 2010, silver in 2014, and individual gold in 2018 – amassed an impressive collection of medals during his career. His seven World Championship golds further solidify his legacy.
“To perform at such a high level for so many years, to always be ready for major events – that's not easy, that was great,” commented national coach Eric Frenzel, acknowledging Rydzek's retirement as a “bitter pill.”
Despite his decision to retire from competition, Rydzek intends to remain involved with Nordic combined. “I want to stay connected to the discipline in some way,” he said.
Rydzek raced in over 18 World Cup individual events. “I spent more than half my life on the World Cup circuit. I will miss this path, the moments, and the people I’ve had the privilege to meet,” he reflected. His departure leaves a void in the sport, particularly given his consistent performances and competitive spirit. The loss is keenly felt by the German team and fans alike.
The upcoming World Cup in Oslo will be his final race. He departs knowing he gave everything to the sport.
