Saarland invests millions to ensure accessibility for special olympics

Just over 100 days remain until the National Special Olympics begin in Saarland, and the state ministry has unveiled the latest developments at a press conference. This year's event, running from June 15th to 20th across various districts, will welcome thousands of athletes with intellectual and multiple disabilities.

Significant funding allocated for venue upgrades

Approximately ten million euros are being invested to renovate and ensure accessibility at Sports facilities throughout the Saarland districts. According to Sports Minister Reinhold Jost (SPD), the project is on schedule, with the aim of completion before the games. A total of four to five million euros from the state budget will support the event. Around 4,000 athletes and 2,350 Unified Partners from Saarland will participate in 28 Sports. Organizers anticipate up to 100,000 visitors.

These competitions, events, and participatory offerings will take place in ten locations across Saarland and on the French border, including Saarbrücken, Nohfelden, and Homburg. However, the Self-Help Association of Disabled People has raised concerns about the accessibility of all venues.

The Saarland government’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment is evident, but ongoing reviews will be essential.
