Dortmund backs injured captain, extends can's stay

The 32-year-old midfielder suffered a torn cruciate ligament in the Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich on February 28th, ruling him out for an extended period. The club revealed the news Saturday morning, just hours before their match against Hamburger SV on matchday 27.

“Emre is our captain and an absolute role model. He is a leader, sets the example, and always puts the team first,” said Dortmund’s sporting director Lars Ricken. “We had already stated shortly after his serious injury that we wanted to continue supporting him because he is an important factor for Borussia Dortmund.”

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl emphasized Can’s importance both on and off the pitch, highlighting his experience and influence within the squad.

Since joining from Juventus in 2020 for €25 million, Can has played 220 competitive matches for Dortmund, scoring 23 goals. Can himself expressed gratitude for the club’s backing, stating his goal is to recover swiftly and rejoin his teammates to achieve success with the team.

The extension is a testament to Dortmund's faith in Can's recovery, even with the significant setback. His leadership and experience will be sorely missed, but the club is clearly prioritizing his well-being and future contribution.

The news comes as Bayern Munich continues to voice criticism regarding refereeing decisions, a familiar narrative in German football.

The Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and Hamburger SV is scheduled for 18:30.
