The Asturian driver, already setting the pace during yesterday’s qualifying, has demonstrated relentless speed, winning four of the six special stages and leaving his rivals scrambling to respond.
A commanding performance for skoda
The Rally Sierra Morena, unfolding under summer-like conditions on gleaming asphalt, appears to be perfectly suited to Suárez’s Skoda. His consistency and outright pace have allowed him to build a significant advantage, setting the stage for a potentially dominant run over the remaining two days. The Fabia RS Rally2 is clearly thriving in these conditions, showcasing the car’s inherent strengths.
But the competition remains fierce. Álvaro Muñiz, also piloting a Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, sits in second place, trailing Suárez by just 20.7 seconds. A late charge from Iván Ares in his Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 saw him secure third, a mere 21.6 seconds off the lead. Ares’s pace suggests he will be a constant threat throughout the rally.
Jorge Cagiao’s European Rally Championship debut has been hampered by a turbo issue, robbing him of power on the straights. However, he compensated with impressive cornering speed, preventing him from falling too far behind the championship contenders. The Citroën C3 Rally2 driver remains within striking distance of the podium, showcasing his resilience despite the mechanical setback. Roberto Blach, in another Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, rounds out the top five, but sits a more distant 1:25.1 behind Suárez.
The battle between Muñiz and Ares promises to be particularly compelling tomorrow. Ares took the final stage of the morning, while Muñiz briefly dislodged him with a blistering performance in the second pass, a mere 9 tenths of a second separating the two Galician drivers.
