Yankees' Schmidt Back on IL With Bicep Issue, Hanner Recalled
Right-hander Clarke Schmidt's recent return to the New York Yankees has been short-lived. The 30-year-old, who had been aiming to bolster the Yankees' bullpen, is once again headed to the injured list. The team announced on Thursday that Schmidt has been placed on the 15-day IL with right bicep neuritis.
Schmidt's Brief Return and Subsequent Setback
The issue arose
during this past weekend's series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Schmidt experienced cramping in his right bicep while warming up in the bullpen. This marked his second appearance since his season debut last Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins. In that outing, Schmidt struck out two batters and allowed two hits across two-thirds of an inning.
Impact on Playoff Roster and Future
Unfortunately, this setback means Schmidt will be ineligible to return for the Yankees during the upcoming Wild Card Series or the ALDS. However, there remains a possibility he could be added to New York's roster for the ALCS or even the World Series, should the Yankees advance that far. Schmidt's situation also has implications for his future contract status; he is arbitration-eligible and will become a free agent for the first time in his career at the conclusion of the 2027 season.
To fill the roster spot, the Yankees have recalled righty Bradley Hanner from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
