Stuttgart facing uphill battle after 2-1 loss to porto in europa league opener
Stuttgart's chances of advancing in the Europa League appear grim after a 2-1 defeat at Porto in the first leg. The Germans must now win at home to stand any chance of progressing.
Porto's swift counter-attacks prove decisive
A start that promised much for Stuttgart soon turned sour as Porto's clinical counter-attacking left the visitors reeling. A misplaced pass by Chabot in the 21st minute led to a swift Porto break, with Zaidu's cross finding Mora at the far post for his side's opening goal.
Just six minutes later, Stuttgart's woes deepened as Porto struck again following another careless giveaway. This time, Undav's clever movement allowed him to turn and fire home, doubling Porto's advantage.
Stuttgart refused to give up, however, and their pressure was rewarded when Undav turned provider, his clever body feint deceiving Thiago Silva before slotting past the Porto goalkeeper. The goal reduced the deficit to 1-2, but that was as good as it got for the German side.
After the break, Stuttgart continued to push, but lacked the killer touch needed to level the scores. A late Stiller goal was ruled out for offside, while Chris Führich also had two gilt-edged chances to draw his team level. However, Porto's impressive defensive record, having conceded just 10 goals in 25 league matches, ultimately proved too strong.
