Aston Villa are appearing in the Super Cup for the first time since 1982. PSG are odds-on favourites to pick up another European trophy, fitting with their back-to-back Champions League triumphs. They arrived on the back of retaining their European crown in dramatic fashion, holding their nerve to beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw following extra time in May.

Villa in talks to recruit a new set-piece coach. In their 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Friday, Aston Villa conceded a poor goal from a set piece to trail 1-0 at half-time. Perhaps it was merely coincidence, but it came just a few days after highly-respected set-piece coach Austin MacPhee left to join Chelsea. So it was no surprise to learn that the West Midlands club have already identified the coach they want to replace him. July - August 2026
For the past four seasons, Aston Villa have been a club on the up. Since Unai Emery arrived as head coach in late 2022, Villa have been either qualifying or challenging for Europe and at times even threatening to gatecrash the Premier League title race. But this summer has been one of change. Key figures Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers have left, left-back Lucas Digne has joined PSG and there is considerable interest in goalkeeper Emi Martinez and defender Ezri Konsa. Johan Manzambi and Joao Gomes have arrived from Freiburg and Wolves respectively and Alejandro Garnacho has joined on loan from Chelsea but pre-season has confirmed that Villa are a team in transition. How quickly Emery can get his new-look squad working coherently will be fascinating.
Pre-Season (July 2026)
Aston Villa arrived back in Europe at the weekend from the Far East, where they have spent the most recent stage of their pre-season preparations. They rounded off the trip with a 2-1 defeat against Bayern Munich in Hong Kong with summer signing Joao Gomes netting their only goal after they had gone 2-0 behind. That followed a 3-1 win over an Indonesia XI in Jakarta, the country's capital. Before heading east, Villa beat English fourth-tier side Walsall 5-0 before suffering two defeats in Europe: a 2-1 loss against Porto in Portugal and a 4-2 reverse against Real Sociedad back in England. Early team news: Villa without key trio Aston Villa will be without Emiliano Martinez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins for today's Super Cup against PSG as manager Unai Emery confirmed none of them will play due to requiring “completely necessary rest”. This is in contrast to the French side, who have welcomed back Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, Fabian Ruiz and Lucas Digne after World Cup duty. In their place, Villa have brought in 20-year-old full-back Triston Rowe into the squad alongside 17-year-old forward Brian Madjo, who will add to Emery’s forward options alongside Tammy Abraham. Villa will also be without midfielder Johan Manzambi, who is recovering from a knee injury, while winger Leon Bailey remains at home as negotiations for a move continue. However, captain John McGinn has been passed fit after suffering a knee injury last week. The Athletic revealed scans showed the injury was not serious, with club sources not ruling out a return against PSG.
