North Dakota State Joins FBS, Seeking New Challenges

FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota State University will begin its transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) this season, marking the end of its two-decade run in the Championship Subdivision.

Bitter Loss Fuels Move to FBS

The Bison suffered a shocking one-point loss to Illinois State in the FCS playoffs last December, a defeat that prompted athletic director Matt Larsen to declare, "We've got to get this done." The Fargodome, typically packed, was only half full during the nail-biting contest.

Fan Support Drives Change

Larsen cited fan desire for a new challenge and increased competition as key factors in the decision. Linebacker Donovan Woolen expressed excitement about facing tougher opponents and testing the team’s potential. “To play better games against better competition is going to be a lot more fun,” Woolen stated.

Rich History, Record Championships

North Dakota State boasts a storied history, having won three national championships in the College Division (1965, 1968, 1969) and five Division II titles (1983, 1985, 1986, 1988 and 1990). Over a 14-year span, the Bison accumulated 10 national championships, defeating FBS teams nine times, including Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Minnesota.

Upcoming Schedule

The Bison’s FBS debut is set for Saturday against Jacksonville State, followed by their Mountain West Conference debut on September 12th at Air Force. Sacramento State is also moving to FBS this season as part of ongoing conference realignment.
