New York Jets Fall to Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Preseason Opener, 24-16

The New York Jets kicked off their 2026 NFL season with a preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium on Friday. Despite a promising start, the Jets ultimately fell short, losing 24-16.

In a game day decision, head coach Aaron Glenn opted not to play starting quarterback Geno Smith, instead handing the reins to fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik. Klubnik made his presence known, going 5-for-7 passing for 56 yards before being replaced by Bailey Zappe.

Zappe's debut was marred by an early interception returned for a touchdown, but he bounced back to lead a 10-play drive for a field goal as time expired in the first half. The Jets trailed 10-13 at the break.

In the second half, the Buccaneers took control, scoring a touchdown on a 12-play, 80-yard drive to take a 17-13 lead. The Jets cut the deficit to one point with a 47-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, but ultimately couldn't overcome the deficit.

Running back Braelon Allen provided a bright spot for the Jets, rushing for a 31-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson also shone early, making two catches for 32 yards, including an impressive 20-yard grab.

Despite the loss, there were encouraging signs for the Jets, particularly from their young players. As the preseason continues, they'll look to build on these performances and make a push for the playoffs in the coming months.
