Martha Reeves Scolds Backup Singers During Star-Spangled Banner Rehearsal

Motown legend Martha Reeves, 85, reportedly expressed her displeasure with backup singers during a rehearsal for the Star-Spangled Banner at the Women’s Pro Baseball League’s inaugural game on August 1st. A newly released video shows Reeves stopping the anthem mid-performance, criticizing the singers’ off-key harmonies and questioning their presence.

Reeves’ Criticism

During the practice session, Reeves stated, “That’s out of tune,” and “Who is singing with me?” She then questioned the necessity of the backup singers, demanding, “Who’s singing the same note I’m singing? Why?” Reeves reportedly felt the singers were unnecessarily loud and out of sync.

Initial Performance Issues

The actual performance at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, was marred by similar issues. Upon hearing the backup singers alongside her, Reeves abruptly stopped the anthem, visibly frustrated and staring at the group. Spectators were observed chuckling during the chaotic moment.

Reeves’ Perspective

“The field conditions were wet and windy, and without stage monitors I wasn’t able to hear myself as I normally would,” Reeves explained after the performance. “While it wasn’t the performance I had hoped for, I’m grateful to have been there in support of these remarkable athletes and this groundbreaking league.” A rehearsal video showed an employee suggesting the inclusion of backup singers, to which Reeves responded, “I think so,” despite ultimately objecting to their participation.
