Mahomes takes major step towards chiefs return
Patrick Mahomes took a significant step in his recovery from a knee injury, participating in the Kansas City Chiefs' offseason program kickoff.

Mahomes progresses through phased return
Since suffering a severe knee ligament tear in December, Mahomes has diligently worked on his NFL comeback. His attendance at the program's start signals that his healing process is progressing as planned.
However, the organization remains cautious to avoid any unnecessary risks. With the season opener looming, the focus is gradually shifting towards that pivotal date.
According to head coach Andy Reid, Mahomes is currently in the rehabilitation phase, combining it with strength training and individual load management. Reid emphasized that the team will approach Mahomes' recovery step by step, observing his progress and adjusting his workload accordingly.
Mahomes' rehabilitation journey began with surgery in Dallas under renowned orthopedist Dr. Dan Cooper. He has since been rehabilitating primarily in Kansas City, fueled by a clear goal to be available for the team in Week 1.
With roughly nine months between his injury and the season start, Mahomes' ambitious yet realistic timeline aligns with common rehabilitation periods for similar injuries.
The NFL's offseason program is structured in phases, allowing Mahomes to gradually increase his on-field activity. Phase one prioritizes strength training, meetings, and rehabilitation, followed by phase two with first contact drills at reduced intensity. The final phase, Organized Team Activities (OTAs), will see the offense and defense reunite, albeit with contact restrictions.
While the Chiefs' future looks promising with Mahomes' steady progress, the organization will not rush his return, prioritizing his long-term health above all else.
