Late goal costs hertha derbies after bochum draw
Hertha BSC's push for a direct Bundesliga promotion spot stalled late Saturday with a frustrating 1-1 draw against VfL Bochum. The result, a mere two points earned, leaves the Berlin side with a significant gap to close and a palpable sense of disappointment, especially for a player celebrating a birthday.

Late drama derails hertha's push
Dawid Kownacki, celebrating his 29th birthday, opened the scoring for Hertha in the 45th minute with a penalty he earned after being fouled by Bochum's Noah Loosli. However, Bochum responded with a stoppage-time equalizer through Leandro Morgalla, snatching a point and denying Hertha a vital victory.
“It’s a very disappointing result when you concede so late,” Hertha coach Stefan Leitl said, echoing the sentiment among his players. The team, missing key winger Marten Winkler due to illness, had largely controlled the game, creating few scoring opportunities for Bochum until the final moments.
Goalkeeper Tjark Ernst lamented the late lapse in concentration. “We cleared the first ball, and then we lost the man who could shoot from three meters – that hurts, of course.” The equalizer felt particularly cruel given Hertha's recent successes against Nürnberg and Münster, victories that had fueled hopes of a quick return to the top flight.
Paul Seguin acknowledged the shift in the second half. “We knew it would be a different game. Bochum had to push more, and we had to weather the storm. It would have been great to get a 2-0, but unfortunately, that didn't happen.” The missed opportunity, and the late concession, dampened the celebratory mood surrounding Kownacki’s birthday.
