Kanter misses out on victory as groenewegen wins chaotic ronde van brugge
A dramatic finish marred by crashes and a rogue spectator saw Dylan Groenewegen of Jayco AlUla claim victory at the 2026 Ronde van Brugge, with Max Kanter of XDS Astana finishing third.

Groenewegen clinches win amidst carnage
The one-day race, shifted from De Panne to Bruges for its 50th edition due to recent safety concerns, was a brutal affair. Strong winds and rain contributed to multiple crashes, forcing several riders, including German sprinter Phil Bauhaus, to abandon the race. Adding to the chaos, a demonstrator carrying a "Children die from the climate crisis" t-shirt briefly blocked the road near the finish, causing a pile-up that took out Colombian defending champion Sebastián Molano (UAE Emirates-XRG).
Kanter, the German sprinter, came agonizingly close to victory in the mass sprint, ultimately finishing third behind Groenewegen and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck). Max Walscheid also performed strongly, briefly leading the sprint but ultimately failing to secure a top-ten finish.
This marks Groenewegen's third consecutive win, continuing his impressive form. The 202.9km course featured a mix of flat terrain and cobblestone sections, testing the riders' endurance and tactical acumen. While the organizers hoped the move to Bruges would improve safety, the race remained fraught with peril.
The incident with the protester raises serious questions about rider safety and the increasing challenges organizers face in managing demonstrations during races. The Ronde van Brugge, previously known as the Bruges-De Panne, has a history of dramatic finishes, but this year's race will be remembered for its unpredictable and dangerous nature. Groenewegen’s victory, however, is a testament to his resilience and sprinting prowess, even amidst the mayhem.
