Italian football corruption probe narrows focus

A major corruption probe into Italian football has shifted its focus, now exclusively targeting the world of referees. The investigation, which began in late 2024 and is set to conclude soon, has identified five specific matches as the core of the scandal.

Key figures and match details emerge

Designated Gianluca Rocchi and fellow Association of Italian Arbiters official Marco Gervasoni are among the primary suspects, with several other unnamed names also implicated. Notably, no current or former Inter Milan players or directors have been drawn into the inquiry thus far.

The probe centers around allegations Rocchi chose favorable referees for matches involving Inter, potentially leading to biased officiating. This claim has sparked legitimate doubts about the evidence presented by prosecutor Maurizio Ascione.

While the investigation was initiated over a year ago, the current timeline suggests all materials will be disclosed and potential recordings made public by the conclusion of the probe.

For now, the inquiry remains confined to current and past Serie A and Coppa Italia matches, with the potential for additional games to be added to the investigation's scope.
