Inter propose sommer stay as backup, eyeing vicario
Inter Milan is considering keeping Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer as a backup next season, even as the club targets Tottenham's Francesco Vicario as its primary target.
Sommer's uncertain future
As Sommer's contract expires in June, Inter's top brass, led by CEO Marotta and sporting director Ausilio, plan to propose an extension to the 37-year-old. While Sommer has been a reliable presence between the posts, his errors in recent matches have cast doubt on his ability to be the undisputed number one.
Meanwhile, Vicario has emerged as the preferred choice to take over as Inter's starting goalkeeper. The 25-year-old Italian has impressed with his performances for Tottenham, helping the team win the 2025 Europa League title.

Martinez's puzzling absence
Another mystery surrounding Inter is the case of Spanish defender Josep Martinez. Since a road accident in October, Martinez has made only sporadic appearances, mostly in cup competitions. His last Serie A start came in September 2023, raising questions about his readiness to contribute to Inter's title push.
Despite investing around €15 million in Martinez in 2024, his performances have not been convincing enough to make him a trusted alternative to Sommer or Vicario. With Inter holding a six-point lead over Milan and Napoli, Martinez's inclusion could prove crucial in the coming weeks.
