Evenepoel's catalan dream crumbles in late-race crash
Vila-seca – A dramatic crash just meters from the finish line shattered the hopes of Belgian cycling prodigy Remco Evenepoel at the Vuelta a España on Thursday. The two-time Olympic champion, who had been locked in a thrilling breakaway with two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, suffered a devastating fall before the finish, ending his chances of victory.

Evenepoel and vingegaard's breakaway ends in tragedy
The pair had spent much of stage three, a 159.5km ride from Vila-seca, with a significant lead over the peloton. Evenepoel, riding for Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, launched a decisive attack 29 kilometers from the finish, with Vingegaard responding instantly. They built a lead of over 10 seconds, a testament to their combined power and tactical acumen.
But the dream dissolved in the final moments. Around a roundabout, disaster struck. Evenepoel went down, his bike crumpling beneath him. He was assessed with bleeding wounds to his arm and leg, his hopes of a stage win extinguished.
Dorian Godon of Ineos Grenadiers ultimately prevailed, winning the stage in a mass sprint against Ethan Vernon of NSN Cycling and Noah Hobbs of EF Education-EasyPost. Michel Heßmann (Movistar) finished ninth, the best German rider in the stage.
Vingegaard, who managed the chase, finished 15th, while Evenepoel crossed the line 106th. Due to the crash, both riders were credited with the same stage time.
Godon’s victory extends his overall lead in the general classification to 11 seconds over Evenepoel, who now sits second heading into the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees on Thursday. The fourth stage will be a grueling 173km test with 4,041 meters of climbing.
The 105th edition of the Vuelta a España concludes in Barcelona on Sunday after seven stages. Evenepoel’s misfortune throws the race wide open, and the mountains will undoubtedly provide a new opportunity for contenders to emerge.
The incident raises questions about the risks inherent in high-stakes cycling and the fragility of even the most meticulously planned attacks. The race continues, but the narrative has irrevocably shifted.
