Dresden sc: seismic shift leaves bundesliga club facing rebuild
The Dresdner SC, a perennial presence in the Bundesliga, is facing a summer of profound change. Just days after a heartbreaking loss to Suhl in the German Championship final, the club announced the departure of eight players, including their two most impactful contributors, Marta Levinska and Lorena Lorber. This isn't a mere reshuffling of personnel; it's a near-total dismantling of a squad that came so close to championship glory.

Levinska's departure stings most
The loss of Levinska, named the league's most valuable player after a season of consistently exceeding expectations, is a particularly significant blow. Coach Alexander Waibl acknowledged her transformative impact, stating, “Marta has far surpassed expectations and has undergone an enormous development. But I am confident we will hear a great deal more from her.” Her absence leaves a gaping hole in Dresden’s attack.
But Levinska isn't alone in heading for the exit. Dresden must also say goodbye to Emma Grome, Larissa Winter, Rosa Entius, Miku Akimoto, Amelia van der Werff, and Amanda Siksna. The sheer scale of the exodus – eight out of twelve players – suggests a deeper structural issue within the club, perhaps stemming from disagreements over strategy or player roles.
Waibl, while acknowledging the “exceptional team spirit” that defined the squad, now faces the daunting task of rebuilding from a drastically weakened foundation. Despite missing out on a record-breaking seventh German championship, the DSC has secured ChampionsLeague qualification as runners-up, a testament to their overall performance throughout the season.
The club has promised to announce new signings shortly. Fortunately for Dresden fans, captain Patricia Nestler and outside hitter Jette Kuipers, key pillars of the team, will remain. However, retaining those two alone won’t be enough to compensate for the loss of so much talent and experience. The question now isn’t whether Dresden can survive this upheaval, but whether they can retain their competitive edge in a league increasingly dominated by financial powerhouses. The coming months will reveal whether Waibl can orchestrate a successful renaissance, or if Dresden is destined for a prolonged period of rebuilding.
