City on the verge: fernandes reveals guardiola's vision and a premier league title push

Manchester City’s stranglehold on the Premier League appears absolute, but a former player – and a surprisingly recent arrival – offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the club’s dominance. Paolo Fernandes, a Spanish defender who spent a crucial period within the Etihad’s youth system, has provided an exclusive account of City’s ambitions and the rapid transformation under Pep Guardiola.

A scouting network that spanned continents

Fernandes’ story begins in Zaragoza, honing his skills on the dusty streets before catching the eye of scouts at just 15. “My agent showed me the interested teams,” he recounts, “City, Arsenal and Liverpool in England, and Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain.” That early exposure to the biggest clubs shaped his aspirations, a testament to the breadth of City’s recruitment strategy.

His arrival coincided with a wave of Spanish talent joining the ranks, a deliberate strategy orchestrated by sporting director Txiki Begiristain. “Spain was coming off a World Cup victory,” Fernandes explains, “and Spanish football had seen a significant resurgence. Guardiola, who arrived in 2016, immediately recognized my potential, giving me valuable training time. He’s a remarkable coach – his explanations were incredibly quick and he was remarkably approachable with the younger players.”

Fernandes’ time at City wasn’t without its challenges – a stint in the Netherlands with NAC Breda was disrupted by injuries, and a return to Spain with Castellón didn’t fully materialize. Yet, he maintains a profoundly positive recollection of his time at the club. “It changed my life,” he states simply. “I can honestly say that period shaped the player I am today.”

Looking ahead, Fernandes believes City’s current position is more than plausible. “I see it as very possible now,” he concedes. “You can never write off Pep’s teams.” A brief sojourn in Holland and subsequent return to Spain marked a period of further development, culminating in a strong season with the club’s youth squad in 2016/17, where he became their top scorer.

Currently contracted to AEK Athens, where he’s enjoying a welcome return to Greek football, Fernandes hinted at a potential return to his homeland. “Not immediately, but eventually I’d like to play in Spain again,” he admits. “I always dreamed of playing for Zaragoza as a kid, even just being part of the first or second team. And I certainly want to see Zaragoza stay in the second division – that’s what I’d really like to see.”

His current situation – a loan spell with Al-Khaleej – offers a glimpse into a potentially rewarding chapter, with his agent already discussing a future return to Spain. A quiet ambition, fuelled by a remarkable journey and an unwavering belief in the City’s potential.
