The search for a new steward for the internationally renowned event has yielded no bidders. An initial call for proposals went unanswered, a blow that left organizers reeling. ‘It was a significant setback,’ admits Andreas Haller, managing director of the Reitturnier Donaueschingen GmbH. ‘Abandoning it isn’t an option at this point.’

Beyond sponsorships: a systemic problem?

The challenges are multifaceted. Sponsorships are drying up, volunteer support is dwindling, and recent controversies have cast a shadow over the sport. The allure of lucrative overseas competitions is pulling riders away from the traditions of Donaueschingen.

A strategic rethink

Options are being considered, ranging from a scaled-down, nationally focused event to a collaborative effort involving multiple partners. Reducing the disciplines and shifting to a lower level of competition are possibilities, though Haller acknowledges that ‘tradition alone can’t guarantee success.’

A legacy under threat

Established in 1954, the CHI Donaueschingen boasts a rich history, including European championships in dressage and show jumping. But even this legacy is proving insufficient to overcome the economic realities. The event has faced a series of setbacks in recent years, culminating in its cancellation this year.
