Chery revives the freelander: a chinese play for global suv domination

The Freelander name – once synonymous with rugged British motoring – has been resurrected, but not in the UK. It’s now a standalone brand, courtesy of Chery, and its first model, the Freelander 8, is already hitting Chinese roads.

A familiar face, a new identity

A familiar face, a new identity

This isn’t simply a rebadging exercise. The automotive landscape in China operates on a radically different principle than in established markets. Sales success routinely triggers a brand spin-off, a strategic maneuver to capitalize on burgeoning demand. Chery, already a significant player in the Spanish market with its Ebro range, is employing a similar tactic – leveraging the legacy of the original Freelander to establish a premium SUV brand.

Crucially, Chery’s partnership with Jaguar-Land Rover provides a crucial injection of expertise. Phil Simmons, a designer renowned for his work on vehicles like the Range Rover Velar and the new Defender, has been brought in to oversee the Freelander 8’s design. His objective? To capture the essence of the original, a compact, capable off-roader, while delivering a distinctly modern aesthetic – a fusion of British DNA and Chinese manufacturing.

The result is a vehicle that retains recognizable cues – the squared headlights, the triangular third window – nods to its illustrious past. Yet, it’s undeniably a product of its environment, boasting a commanding presence, a high beltline, and a clear commitment to 4x4 capability. But don't mistake familiarity for weakness. The Freelander 8 is far from a nostalgic tribute; it’s a technologically advanced SUV equipped with nine off-road modes and a sophisticated air suspension system, supported by Chery’s intelligent i-ATS (All Terrain System).

The brand’s ambition extends beyond China. Chery intends to establish itself as a global contender in the premium SUV segment. And, whisper it, a European rollout isn’t entirely out of the question. The Freelander 8 represents a calculated gamble – a brand built on heritage, refined by design, and fuelled by the potential of a rapidly evolving automotive market. It's a bold move, and one that will be watched closely.
