Brees Surprised by Jersey on Benson Statue in Canton

Canton, Ohio – New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees was taken by surprise Thursday morning at Tom Benson Stadium when he encountered a jersey of his own on a statue honoring the late team owner, Tom Benson.

The statue, located in the west end zone plaza, was draped in a Saints jersey – Brees’ game jersey – in recognition of his upcoming induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. “That’s a big surprise,” Brees said, smiling. “I was walking up here expecting to see the Mr. Benson statue, just didn’t expect to see my jersey on him.”

“That’s awesome. That’s very sweet of (Saints owner) Ms. Gayle (Benson) to think of that,” Brees added.

Brees and the 2026 Hall of Fame class will attend the Thursday night Hall of Fame game in Benson Stadium, following an event-filled day including autograph and interview sessions. Connections from San Diego, Texas, and Purdue were present in Canton. Brees’ journey with the Saints began in 2006 under Tom Benson’s leadership. “It’s a good look on Mr. B,” Brees stated, recalling Benson’s preference for jackets and ties over jerseys. “I saw Mr. Benson in a lot of jackets and ties. I never saw him in a jersey. That would have been a good one.”

Brees reflected on preparing his Hall of Fame speech, describing it as “writing a 20-chapter book and consolidating it into 12 minutes.” He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the many people and moments that shaped his career.
