Ben Simmons Pursues NBA Comeback After Fishing Hiatus
Ben Simmons, the 30-year-old power forward, is attempting a comeback in the NBA ahead of the 2026-27 season, with several teams reportedly expressing interest.
Simmons' NBA Career and Decline
Simmons was once one of the league's top players, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2017-18 and making three All-Star appearances. He also received two first-team All-Defensive selections and a third-team All-NBA nod during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers.
During his four seasons in Philly, Simmons averaged 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, showcasing his elite perimeter defense, playmaking, and transition abilities. However, his reluctance to shoot jumpers became a persistent issue, ultimately leading to a hesitancy to attack offensively at all.
This reluctance culminated in his infamous passed-up dunk against the Atlanta Hawks in Game 7 of the 2020-21 Eastern Conference Semifinals. Following that season, Simmons requested a trade and eventually held out, not playing for the 76ers in the 2021-22 campaign.
Trade to Brooklyn and Injury-Plagued Stint
Simmons was traded to the Brooklyn Nets as part of the James Harden deal. However, he appeared in only 90 games over four seasons with the Nets due to recurring back and knee injuries.
In February 2025, the Nets bought out Simmons' contract, and he subsequently signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. Although he played 18 games as a bench option, averaging 2.9 points and 3.1 assists per game, his stint with the Clippers was short-lived.
Fishing Hiatus and NBA Comeback Attempt
Simmons took the 2025-26 season off from basketball, instead focusing on his passion for professional fishing. Now, he's attempting to return to the NBA, with several teams reportedly showing interest in his services.
