Munich's FC Bayern Basketball team has officially missed out on the EuroLeague playoffs for the fourth consecutive season after a 71-78 loss to Zalgiris Kaunas on Tuesday. The team now sits at 16th place with a record of 20 losses and 13 wins, facing a crucial home game against Asvel Villeurbanne on Thursday. The gap to the qualification spots is now six wins.

The season's woes began early with a string of unfortunate events. Key player Rokas Jokubaitis suffered a torn ACL during the European Championship. Head coach Gordon Herbert was sidelined by COVID-19 in October. The signing of NBA player Spencer Dinwiddie proved unsuccessful. Adding to the challenges, the team endured a difficult schedule with seven consecutive away games before Christmas, failing to secure a single victory.

Following Herbert's dismissal, Svetislav Pešić took over, sparking a temporary resurgence. However, inconsistent performances plagued the team, preventing them from consistently challenging for wins. Bayern reached the playoffs only twice in the past five years, in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Milan. The following year, they benefited from the exclusion of Russian teams and reached the quarterfinals again, losing to FC Barcelona.

Despite the season's failures, Bayern remains the clear favorite in the domestic Bundesliga, currently holding the top spot with only three losses in 23 games. But the EuroLeague campaign serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the club as they navigate a period of significant transition. The pursuit of European glory remains a distant prospect.
