Augenthaler hangs up his boots at 68

Klaus Augenthaler, the former Bayern Munich and Germany defender, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 68.

Augenthaler ends distinguished career

In an interview with the Münchner Abendzeitung, Augenthaler revealed that he had been contemplating retirement for some time. 'I've thought about it a lot,' he said. 'But at some point, it's just over.' The former libero cited his increasing age and the strain of constant travel as factors in his decision.

Augenthaler, who played 15 years for Bayern Munich, made 551 appearances for the club and also won the 1990 World Cup with Germany. He went on to have a successful coaching career, guiding clubs like Nuremberg, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg.

In his new life, Augenthaler plans to remain involved with Bayern, attending legend games and staying fit through training. He also looks forward to spending more time with his family, particularly his young son Maximilian, who shares his love of football.
