Napoli's maradona stadium gets a vibrant facelift with fan-chosen mural
Napoli's iconic Diego Armando Maradona Stadium is embarking on a significant transformation, starting with a striking visual overhaul. A massive mural, titled “Napoli dream team,” now adorns the exterior facade, directly opposite the stands. The artwork features portraits of the club's most celebrated players, selected through a fan poll initiated by artist Jorit.
Fan favorite legends take center stage
The mural prominently features the legendary Diego Maradona, alongside a lineup of iconic figures like Dino Zoff, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Marek Hamsik. This artistic tribute, unveiled by city officials, signals a broader revitalization effort for the stadium and the surrounding Fuorigrotta neighborhood.
Mayor Gaetano Manfredi emphasized that the mural honors the city’s footballing history. The project is part of a larger plan to modernize the stadium, with an estimated €203 million earmarked for renovations. Initial funds, totaling €50 million, will come from the city, with the remaining amount expected from the Campania region and international sponsors.
The stadium's modernization will include the removal of the athletics track, improving sightlines and creating more space for spectators. The aim is to enhance the fan experience, incorporating features like expanded hospitality areas, restaurants, and a dedicated “Diego Armando Maradona Experience” hub within the Fuorigrotta district.
While the stadium’s potential bid to host Euro 2032 remains a priority, Manfredi stressed that the renovation is proceeding regardless. The city is focused on improving accessibility, particularly through upgrades to parking facilities, and integrating the stadium better into the urban fabric. The project will ensure sporting events can continue uninterrupted during construction, a key consideration for a venue that expects to accommodate up to 70,000 spectators after the addition of 15,000 seats.
The focus on enhancing the stadium’s ambiance extends to improved acoustics and weather protection. This transformation isn't just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a modern, accessible, and fan-centric venue, a fitting legacy for a stadium synonymous with Napoli's rich footballing past.
