Nagelsmann defends relationship with undav amidst interview controversy
Julian Nagelsmann has pushed back against reports of a strained relationship with striker Deniz Undav, addressing the fallout from a recent interview that sparked speculation about a rift between the coach and the VfB Stuttgart forward.

Nagelsmann clarifies communication with undav following public remarks
Undav, in a statement to Sky Sports a week before the latest German national team squad announcement, had indicated he was not in contact with Nagelsmann and expressed frustration with his public image. Nagelsmann now claims the interview with Undav occurred “under questionable circumstances,” a remark directed at the journalists who secured the piece.
However, Nagelsmann offered a different perspective on their interactions, stating that Undav received a detailed plan of action from him in December. The coach explained this plan was designed to refocus Undav's efforts beyond goals and assists, aiming to re-establish him as a key player after he was not selected for the November games. “Deniz is a player who reacted to that, and I hear from my players how much feedback they want: Deniz said he knows what to do and he wants to focus on that,” Nagelsmann elaborated.
The Bundestrainer insisted that everything between him and Undav is “absolutely fine.” He swiftly cut off a reporter’s question about potential unmet feedback, reiterating Undav’s own words: “He said, call me again before the nomination. Those were his words.” Nagelsmann also addressed Undav’s subsequent remarks, suggesting the forward expressed regret over his phrasing in the interview, a sentiment the coach deemed unnecessary.
“And he said, in his very charming way, what he said in the interview. He then said that he didn’t mean it that way and that he had to apologize. He didn’t have to. There’s nothing to apologize for. It’s just about how we communicate things and what might be interpreted,” Nagelsmann concluded.
The situation underscores the delicate balance between player autonomy and coaching directives in the high-pressure environment of international football. Nagelsmann’s defense of his communication strategy suggests a firm belief in his approach to player development and team management.
Undav is expected to remain part of the national team plans, though his performance in upcoming matches will undoubtedly be scrutinized.
