Mihambo falls short of berlin indoor title in thrilling race

Berlin – Malaika Mihambo, the Tokyo Olympics champion, narrowly missed out on victory at the Berliner ISTAF Indoor on Saturday, finishing second in the long jump. The German star leaped to 6.57 meters, matching her own indoor season's best set just last week at the German Championships in Dortmund.

The Dutch athlete Pauline Hondema edged out Mihambo, also with a jump of 6.57 meters, but secured the win with a slightly better second-best attempt. Switzerland’s Annik Kälin took third place with 6.56 meters, highlighting the incredibly close competition among the top three.

Mihambo’s performance was a dramatic back-and-forth. After a shaky start, placing her eighth after three rounds, she surged into the lead with her fourth jump. Hondema responded in her fourth attempt, matching Mihambo's distance and holding it throughout the final round. The first three athletes were separated by a mere centimeter, a testament to the high level of performance.

The 32-year-old had previously stated her intention to conclude her indoor season after the ISTAF, citing physical fatigue and a focus on the outdoor season. She had already ruled out participation in the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland. Her decision underscores a pragmatic approach to managing her body and prioritizing future competitions. The narrow margins in this competition only reinforce the intensity of the track and field season.
