Köln appoints tim steidten to revamp squad planning
1. FC Köln is signaling a renewed commitment to strategic recruitment with the appointment of Tim Steidten as their new Director of Squad Planning & Recruiting. The move, announced Thursday, aims to inject fresh direction into the club's transfer strategy after a period of inconsistency.
Steidten returns to bundesliga after west ham stint
Steidten, a seasoned talent scout with a reputation for identifying undervalued players, returns to the Bundesliga following a stint with West Ham United. The 46-year-old, previously with Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen, expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the German league, stating his excitement about the clear structure outlined by FC's sporting director, Thomas Kessler.
“After my time in the Premier League, I’m delighted to be back in the Bundesliga,” Steidten said. “Last year, I consciously took a step back to define what’s important for my next role. Thomas laid out a clear structure for how recruitment and scouting will operate at the FC, and on a personal level, it just clicked. Thomas is ambitious, and no one knows the FC and its challenges better.”
The newly created Director level will include three additional leaders: Markus Halfmann, who continues to oversee youth development, Lukas Berg as Technical Director for video, fitness, and the U-21 team, and Nicole Bender-Rummler continuing to manage women's and girls' football. Köln’s managing director emphasized that Steidten’s expertise is intended to sharpen processes and foster sustainable success in squad building.
Steidten's return comes as Köln aims to solidify its position in the Bundesliga after a challenging season. The club has invested heavily in identifying and acquiring talent, but results have been inconsistent. The new director’s task is clear: to build a more robust and forward-thinking recruitment system.
The club's leadership believes that Steidten's experience and network will be invaluable in navigating the complexities of the transfer market and identifying players who fit the club's long-term vision. The move represents a significant shift in approach, signaling a desire to move beyond reactive signings and embrace a more proactive, data-driven strategy.
