After a day of breakaways and a late attack from Ineos' Tim van der Hoorn, Dati emerged from the peloton with 200 meters to go to claim the stage win and don the first yellow jersey.

The Ukyo Team rider from Camaiore timed his sprint perfectly, crossing the line ahead of Britain's Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5) and Germany's Florian Stork (Tudor) to take a 4-second lead over Pidcock and 6 seconds on Stork heading into the second stage.

Dati's triumph marked his second professional win of the season, following his stage victory in the Semana Coppi e Bartali earlier this month.

Earlier in the day, an escape group of three – Tobias Nolde (Germany), Emanuel Zangerle (Austria), and Josef Dirnbauer (Austria) – built a sizeable gap before being reeled in by the peloton in the final kilometers.

The stage was set up for a thrilling finish, with the riders tackling the feared 5.8% climb of Brandjochstrabe before a rapid descent into the city center.

As the favorites launched their attacks, Dati remained patient before unleashing a blistering sprint to take the win and the overall lead.

The second stage takes the peloton from Telfs to Martell/Val Martello, a 147.5-kilometer route featuring three climbs, including the daunting 8.1% ascent to the finish atop Martell.

With the favorites now in hot pursuit, the stage sets the stage for a gripping battle for overall supremacy.
