Holdener crowned swiss sportswoman of the year – a podium finish fuels her ambition
Wendy Holdener’s relentless drive, fueled by a string of podium finishes including three silvers at the Saalbach World Championships, has earned her the prestigious title of Swiss Sportswoman of the Year 2025. The alpine ski racer, representing Unteriberg, secured the victory, beating five strong contenders.

A new era for swiss sport
The inaugural Schwyzer Sports Awards event, held at the Mythenforum, showcased the region’s top athletes. Holdener’s win marks a pivotal moment, exceeding the accomplishments of previous champions like Tanja Hüberli. But this isn’t just about individual brilliance; it’s about a sustained performance that resonates across the Swiss sporting landscape.
Alongside Holdener, the Biathlon duo of Amy Baserga and Niklas Hartweg took home the Team of the Year award, their fourth-place finish in the mixed-staffel at the Lenzerheide World Championships proving a key factor. The EHC Seewen and Michael Vogt’s Bob team also vied for the title, although Vogt’s 2026 Olympic bronze – understandably – wasn’t factored into this year’s consideration.
Emerging talent Debora Annen was recognized as Newcomer of the Year, defeating established figure Jil Sanchez in a fiercely competitive field. Annen, a U23 World Champion, is undoubtedly one to watch.
Kurt Trachler, a dedicated football youth development coach, was honored with the Engagement and Verdienste award, highlighting the vital work being done behind the scenes to nurture future talent. Baserga and Hartweg, already Team of the Year in 2024, continue to dominate, though their previous success against Hüberli underscores the dynamic shift occurring within Swiss athletics.
Holdener, speaking after the ceremony, emphasized the importance of perseverance: “It’s a huge recognition, and I can’t imagine anything bigger.” The 14-time medallist urged young athletes to remain steadfast in their goals, despite inevitable setbacks. This isn’t simply a celebration of victory; it’s a testament to the grit required to compete at the highest level.
The event highlighted not just the winners but the broader ecosystem of Swiss sport, demonstrating a commitment to recognizing excellence across all disciplines. And while the awards themselves are new, the dedication and drive of athletes like Holdener, Baserga, Hartweg, and Annen are a tradition in the making.”n
