Philipp's season hampered by injury – roth remains a priority
Laura Philipp’s 2026 season, already teetering on the brink, has taken a significant blow. The former Ironman world champion is battling severe back and abdominal pain, forcing a premature exit from her training camp and a hospital stay.
A disrupted ascent
The 39-year-old German triathlete, currently considered the nation’s top long-distance competitor, was admitted to a clinic after struggling with debilitating pain during her altitude training. As she explained on Instagram, a photo accompanying her post depicting her in a hospital bed with a grim expression, ‘I had to spend the last few days in the hospital. Instead of starting my new year as planned with lots of training in the beautiful mountains, strong stomach and back pain forced me to spend the last days in the hospital.’

Looking ahead – roth and beyond
While acknowledging the setback, Philipp remains cautiously optimistic. ‘I’m getting better slowly, I can eat and drink again and hope to regain my old form soon,’ she stated. ‘I hope my new year will run with a little less drama from now on.’ Her ambitions include competing in the prestigious Challenge Roth on July 5th – a crucial checkpoint on her path to the World Championships in Hawaii on October 10th. Philipp secured bronze at the past two Big Island showdowns, with victories in Nice at the alternative location in 2023 and 2025. The situation remains fluid, but the focus now shifts to recovery and rebuilding momentum.
The pressure is on to get back to peak condition before the World Championships, a race she’s consistently found herself near the podium.
Despite the disruption, Philipp is determined to remain competitive. ‘I’m hoping for a year with a little less drama,’ she concluded, a sentiment that likely reflects the realities of a demanding sport and a challenging recovery.
