The speed of the deterioration was critical, forcing immediate hospitalization in Birmingham.

Despite the immense trauma, Kearns expressed deep gratitude to the hospital staff. “We had to go through four or five days of hell in that hospital in Birmingham,” she admitted. “I think we only really understood what we’d been through until now.” She emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention, stating that had she dismissed her symptoms, “probably everyone would have just said ‘sleep it off’ – and it could have been fatal.”
