Brandt's milestone stymied: dortmund star's 300th appearance ends in disappointment

Julian Brandt’s 300th appearance for Borussia Dortmund ended on a sour note. The 29-year-old attacking midfielder played just seven minutes against Hamburger SV, failing to even touch the ball in a deeply underwhelming milestone.

Brandt's historic day turns to frustration

The Bundesliga fixture saw Brandt brought on late in the game, just seconds before stoppage time. Coach Niko Kovac admitted he’d intended to introduce the veteran earlier, but a late surge from Dortmund prevented the change. "I wanted to bring him on 20 minutes earlier," Kovac conceded after the 3-2 defeat. "But the team had gained momentum, and I didn't want to interrupt that."

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl relayed that Kovac offered Brandt words of comfort in the dressing room, and the team acknowledged the significance of the occasion with applause. Kehl, who amassed 362 appearances for Dortmund, offered a wry perspective: "300 games for Borussia Dortmund is a huge number. I’ve managed a few more, of course, but it’s still a fantastic achievement. Maybe it wasn’t ideal to play so briefly. But the game was very hectic and wild. I think Jule understood.");

Brandt, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been a key player for Dortmund, contributing numerous goals and assists throughout his tenure. Kovac praised Brandt’s overall contribution to the club, both on and off the pitch. “You can say a lot of good things about Julian Brandt. He has played 300 games for BVB, scored dozens of goals and provided many assists.” Kovac added that Brandt has built “a great career for a very, very big club”.

The abbreviated celebration underscores a bittersweet moment for Brandt, a player widely expected to depart Dortmund this summer. His impact on the team will be remembered, even if this particular anniversary wasn't the triumphant occasion he – and perhaps his coach – had hoped for.
